Cruise Tips & Guides

Real advice from someone who's actually been on these ships.

🧳

What to Pack for a Cruise

  • Formal night outfits (most cruises have 1–2 elegant evenings)
  • Comfortable walking shoes for port days
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat (the sun at sea is intense)
  • A small day bag or backpack for shore excursions
  • A power strip (no surge protector) since cabin outlets are limited
  • Motion sickness medication just in case
  • A carry-on with essentials for embarkation day, since luggage arrives later
💰

Budgeting for Your Cruise

  • The cruise fare is just the start, so budget for gratuities, drinks, and excursions
  • Drink packages can save money if you plan to drink moderately or more
  • Book shore excursions early because popular ones sell out fast
  • Specialty dining restaurants are worth it for 1–2 meals
  • Use onboard credits wisely since they expire when you disembark
  • Pre-pay gratuities when booking to spread out the cost
🚢

First-Time Cruiser Tips

  • Arrive at your departure port a day early to avoid missing the ship
  • Complete the muster drill (safety briefing) as soon as you board
  • Explore the ship on embarkation day while it's less crowded
  • Dining room reservations fill up, so make them before you sail
  • Download the cruise line app before you leave (it's your onboard guide)
  • Sea days are not boring. There's more to do than you'd expect!

Cruising with Kids

  • Most major cruise lines have free kids clubs by age group
  • Book a balcony cabin if budget allows (kids love it)
  • Connecting staterooms are available on most ships
  • Early dining seating works better for families with young kids
  • Check the age minimum for kids clubs before sailing
  • Bring nightlights because cruise ship cabins are very dark
🌍

Choosing the Right Itinerary

  • Caribbean: warm weather year-round, great for first-timers and families
  • Mediterranean: best April–October, incredible history and food
  • Alaska: best May–September, stunning scenery and wildlife
  • Longer itineraries mean more sea days, which is great for relaxing
  • Shorter 3–5 night cruises are ideal for testing the waters
  • Consider port-intensive vs. relaxed itineraries based on your style

Getting the Most Out of Your Cruise

  • Wake up early on port days to beat the crowds at popular spots
  • Try the main dining room at least once. It's included and often excellent!
  • Use the spa during port days when it's less crowded and sometimes cheaper
  • Chat with your cabin steward early. They remember what you like
  • Attend the captain's cocktail party if invited (it's a fun experience)
  • Take a photo of your cabin number. Easy to forget on big ships!
